What to do with "School of Rembrandt" or "Follower of Annibale Carracci"
when coding a record for a work of art?? This question circulates
regularly in art and visual resource cataloging circles. And if you can
decide what to call that artist without a known name, how would you code
it in a MARC field or other database language? A paper on the topic of
constructing and coding anonymous artist names, particularly those related
to a known artist, has been prepared for discussion by the ARLIS/NA
Cataloging Advisory Committee in Philadelphia. The principal author of the
paper is Liz O'Keefe of the Pierpont Morgan Library.

CAC is working toward presenting this discussion paper to the USMARC
Advisory Group, which is the body responsible for changes to the USMARC
format.

The paper has been put on a web page at
http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/9783.

Comments are welcome, both by correspondence now or in person in
Philadelphia.
