Green and Meyer libraries have suffered major water damage to both
collections and facilities as a result of the flooding which occurred
during the early hours of Tuesday, February 3.
All damaged materials, which were housed exclusively in the basement
areas of both buildings, have been moved out and transported to a
freezer facility in the East Bay.
Approximately 4,000 cartons were loaded into trucks on Tuesday
afternoon, containing around 100,000 volumes which were removed from
the basement of Green, Government Documents, Cubberley's basement
storage as well as the Music Library and the Archive of Recorded
Sound.
The next efforts involve assessing damage to books, microforms, and
equipment. An action plan to minimize further risk to the
collections has been formulated and is being carried out.
As of the evening February 4th, there was still no power to Green
Library and it is unclear when the library will re-open. Every
effort is being mounted to open the Facilities as soon as is safe for
both people and library materials.
Reference and Circulation services are still available in Meyer.
The seriousness of the disaster should not be underestimated;
however, the response of staff and students has been magnificent and
will remain the most memorable aspect of the response effort.
