American Philanthropy Review this week opened the doors to its
eleventh nonprofit-sector Internet discussion forum, Arts_Gift.

As its name implies, Arts_Gift focuses on all aspects of fund
raising for the visual arts, performing arts, cultural organizations, and
humanities organizations. Arts_Gift will be of interest to professionals
working for and on behalf of such organizations who are responsible for
raising charitable contributions. It will also be of interest to those
who, while not full-time fund development professionals, are involved in
any aspect of fund raising for such organizations.

While discussions will center on fund raising for such organizations in
the USA and Canada, individuals from other countries are welcome to join in.

The launch of Arts_Gift comes at a time when giving to arts and
cultural organizations is on the upswing in North America, riding a strong
economy. In the USA, for example, Americans gave such organizations $10.92
billion in 1996, up $1 billion from two years prior.

Yet arts, cultural and humanities organizations are uniquely vulnerable to
changes in the economy that impact private giving. Such organizations rely
much more than other nonprofits on direct contributions. In the USA in
1996, for example, 38.7% of their funding came from private contributions,
compared to only 10.2% for all other non-religious nonprofits.

The reliance of these organizations on private contributions underscores
the importance of an Internet discussion list dedicated to the unique needs
of fund raising for arts, cultural and humanities organizations.
