history text from almost 30 years ago and found a copy of that text here in
the library (James Westfall Thompson and Edgar Nathaniel Johnson, An
Introduction to Medieval Europe, 300-1500). The photo follows p.852. The
caption reads: "The Annunciation on the Marienkapelle at Wurzburg. A very
German Gabriel is making an important announcement to a very German Virgin
Mary with full cheeks and with her hair down her back. God sits above with
bare feet. From God's mouth to Mary's left ear runs a tube, terminating in
the figure of a dove, symbol for the Holy Ghost. The future baby Jesus is
liding down the tube head first on his stomach with arms in front of him...."
