SEMINAR- 20th Century Art in Asian and Western Societies: The Development
of Methodologies in Understanding Contemporary Art in its Context

This seminar is an exchange between the Research-group 'Art and Material
Culture', which is part of the Research-school CNWS (School of Asian,
African and Amerindian Studies) at the University of Leiden (the
Netherlands) and the Seminar fuer Orientalische Kunstegschichte at the
University of Bonn (Germany). The concept of modern art (including fine
art, performing arts, dance, music) in the 20th century is no longer viewed
as just a `case of the West'. In this century, and more in particular
after 1945, the art-world is confronted with an important modern art
production which stems from the so-called `non-western' societies. How
do Western scholars approach these art-forms? How do scholars, critics,
recipients within these `non-western' cultures deal with their contemporary
art? How are both related? Since the involved researchers spring from
various disciplines (a/o Western and Non-Western Arthistory, Cultural
Anthropology, and the various Studies of Languages and Cultures of Asia,
China, Japan, Indonesia, Oceania) different, disciplinary-bound points
of view will be discussed and exchanged, in order to come to a better
understanding of the various approaches and a deeper insight into
understanding art in its context and to discuss the possibility of
an interdisciplinary theoretical frame-work.
