Ohio Humanities Council Grants for Libraries

The Ohio Humanities Council has received an allocation of $200,000 from
state funds to be used for Ohio's libraries. The money will be allocated
through the budget of the State Library of Ohio. The funding will
enable the OHC to offer a range of program options to libraries
statewide.

The OHC announces several new grant categories. Offered on a
competitive basis, library grants of up to $5,000 are available in the
following three categories:

Collaborative Projects: OHC encourages collaboration between libraries
and other nonprofit organizations, especially on topics related to its
theme of Reflection and Renewal: Creating Community for the Next
Century. In the past, OHC has found that historical societies, local
colleges and universities, and civic organizations make good partners in
creating a larger schedule of events than the library alone could
offer.

Literacy Projects: OHC will offer grants to fund programs that support
parents with low-reading skills in their efforts to read with their
children, or other types of intergenerational programs that develop
listening, reading, and writing skills. Collaborations with adult
education and other literacy organizations are also encouraged.

Poets and Writers in Person: OHC seeks proposals that bring noted poets
and authors to the library for readings and talks on humanities themes.

For libraries with sufficient space and staff, the OHC is pleased to
offer a new program of high-quality traveling humanities exhibits.
Libraries can choose from a number of small, visually striking
exhibits
- multi-faceted explorations of other cultures and times, fascinating
portraits of visionary leaders and unsung heroes and heroines, and
thoughtful reflections on human-kind's past and future. Many of the
exhibits will come with educational and promotional material as well as
suggestions for related programming.

The Ohio Humanities Council has a long standing relationship with the
State Library. They offer an extended program called Let's Talk About
It, a book discussion series with a variety of themes including Ohio and
American history, multicultural perspectives, work and home, and the
environment.

For more information or to discuss your library's project ideas, please
contact OHC program officer Patricia Miranda at 1-614-461-7802.
