Dear Colleagues,

Thank you all for your responses to my question about commercially available
databases.  Thanks to the valuable assistance of a Herron Library =
Assistant,=3D
 I
am sending a summary of all the responses.  A copy of the project purpose
statement is included.

Project purpose statement:

=3D3E=3D3EThe purpose of this project is two-fold.
One - To allow searching by the general public and scholars of a Sybase =3D
database
of bibliographical citations on the Internet using simple Boolean Web =3D
searches.
The Boolean searching will include the functions of =3D2Aand,=3D2A =
=3D2Aor,=3D2A and=3D
 =3D2Anot.=3D2A
Searchers should be able to retrieve and print specific bibliographical
citations matching their searches.  Bibliographical citations should allow =
=3D
for
display of diacritics and some foreign characters (International character =
=3D
set)
and a display that follows standard bibliographical style manuals. Searches
should not be case sensitive.

Two -  To permit data entry of bibliographical entries and subject indexing
through a Web interface. The functions to be included are: searching, entry,
review, updating, editing of existing entries. The data entry functions =
must=3D
 be
security protected. The final product will be used with modifications for =
=3D
other
in-house created databases.=3D3E=3D3E


Summary of responses to listserv request for information.

Most ILS vendors exhibiting at ALA use either self-developed systems or =3D
Oracle.
Several other databases were mentioned - two vendors use Sybase (This
information was provided by a conference attendee.)
