The Visual Resources Association Nancy DeLaurier Writing Awards Committee
is very pleased to announce the recipients of this year's awards:

*Emily Godbey (Department of Art History, University of Chicago)
"Picture Me Sane: Photographic Magic Lantern Slides in a
Nineteenth-Century Insane Asylum" The Committee found this informative
paper, which covers a range of disciplines not usually included in our
literature, to contribute to the history of the visual image and
photography by placing it in its cultural, medical, and societal context.

*Michael Angeles (School of Communications, Information and Library
Studies, Rutgers University) "Analysis and Description of an International
Visual Resources Index: A proposal for building an image indexing database"
The Committee felt this ambitious paper was well-grounded in actual visual
management issues in its description of systems which facilitate the
discovery of visual resources.

Recipients will be announced at the 1998 VRA Annual Conference in
Philadelphia, March 3-7. Each will receive $200.00 and a one-year
complimentary VRA membership. Both winning submissions will be published in
the Fall issue of the "Visual Resources Association Bulletin."

The Nancy DeLaurier Writing Awards Committee extends its congratulations to
these two recipients for their excellent contributions to the literature of
the field, and wishes to thank all of those who participated in this year's
awards program. The Visual Resources Association looks forward to
continuing its recognition of quality research and writing on visual
resources issues in the name of Nancy DeLaurier, whose long and singular
dedication to publication in the field has served as an inspiration for
this awards program.
