JOB TITLE:  PICTURE LIBRARIAN  (f/t permanent -- available August 1997)

SALARY/BENEFITS:  Salary high 20K's.  Full benefits package includes 3
weeks annual paid vacation, employer-sponsored health and dental plans,
401K savings plan with generous employer match, tuition waivers for
continuing education classes at the School of Visual Arts.

SCOPE OF POSITION:  Manages Picture Collection of 250,000+ images,
including collection development and maintenance, supervision of student
workers, reference assistance to patrons, budget preparation and
statistical reports (circulation, repairs, etc.).  Provides general
library reference service two days per week, including Saturday during
the academic year.  Conducts four library instruction classes each
semester.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

--Picture Collection--

*  Collection development.  Adds current and historical images regularly
to the collection.  Develops new sources for images from subscriptions,
specialized book and periodical purchases and donations.

*  Collection classification.  Updates heading lists, creates new
categories and appropriate cross references to assist users.

*  Provides daily reference assistance to Picture Collection users.

*  Maintains collection statistics, including circulation, repairs,
patron requests for materials.

*  Develops annual Picture Collection budget, including plans for new
furniture, equipment, other enhancements.

*  Plans for the integration of digital images into the collection,
including stock photography resources with appropriate licensing and
copyright clearance.

*  Supervises student workers in ongoing collection maintenance.


--General Reference--

*  Provides general reference assistance at the public reference desk
twice weekly, including regular Saturday hours.

*  Conducts four general library instruction classes each semester to
first-year Humanities classes.  Each class includes a 45-minute
presentation about the library's resources and basic research methods,
plus assistance to students with their library-bases assignments.


QUALIFICATIONS:  Master of Library Science degree for ALA-accredited
school, or MLS in progress.  Will also consider candidates with graduate
education in art or the humanities with clear capacity to fulfill the
position's reference/instructional responsibilities.  Previous library
experience preferred.  Candidate must be well-organized, with excellent
oral communication skills.  Also, must be visually oriented, with solid
knowledge of general history, current events, popular culture, art and
design.  Must be computer literate (Macintosh or PC). Candidates must be
available to work Saturday hours regularly during the academic year:
Sept.-late Dec.; mid Jan.-early May.

The Visual Arts Library of the School of Visual Arts serves an
educational community of 2,000 full-time undergraduate, 250 graduate,
and 4,000 continuing education students, and an adjunct faculty of 650.
The library's collection includes 65,000 books, 280 current periodical
subscriptions, 250,000 pictures, plus special holdings of film scripts,
videotapes, slides and comics.  Collection emphases are on the history
of art and design and the humanities.
