Subject: RLG Meta Access

The Research Libraries Group sponsored a Meta Access Summit on the 1st of
July. Since Elisa Lanzi (chair of the VRA Data Standards Committee) was
unable to attend, and since I was in San Francisco for ALA, she asked me
to represent the DSC.

I have written a report which is posted at
http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/9783

If you do not have easy access to the web and would like me to email it
to you, please let me know. (Or I could even mail it to you in an
envelope though I assume that you have email if you're reading this
message). My ALA report will be posted when it is complete.

The summit emphasized Dublin Core as the (a) lingua franca for metadata
-- the common denominator (hopefully not so low as to be unhelpful). The
biggest problem for visual resources is whether the metadata represents
the original resource or its "webness" -- particularly the Date and
Source categories. These are both prominent among the issues for the 5th
DC workshop which is to take place in Helsinki in October 1997. Murtha
Baca from the Getty was also a strong voice for relevant VR issues.

If you have questions about the summit or my report, please ask.
