UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE LIBRARIAN
Temporary Part-time Reference Librarian
SOCIAL SCIENCES/PROFESSIONAL LIBRARIES
ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN LIBRARY

25% 10-month appointment, with potential for extension
August 1, 1997 - May 30, 1998
Salary: $31,032 - $41,652 depending on qualifications*

     The Environmental Design Library, a branch of the UCB
Libraries located in Wurster Hall, has a collection of
180,000 volumes and serves the College of Environmental
Design and its 1,300 students, staff and faculty in the
Department of Architecture, City and Regional Planning, and
Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning.
     The Library is also heavily used by other students,
faculty and staff on campus, the local community, and
regional and national scholars. Staff consists of 1.75
librarians and 3.25 library assistants, in addition to 3 FTE
students assistant employees.

     RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general direction of the
Head of the Environmental Design Library performs:

     REFERENCE: 6-10 hours per week at busy reference desk
     assisting users in identifying and using Library
     resources related to environmental design. May assist
     in creation of WWW-based reference guides and
     bibliographies.

     COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT OR BIBLIOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTION:
     Depending on skills and expertise, may assist 1-2 hours
     per week with selection or bibliographic instruction in
     some area of architecture, city and regional planning,
     or landscape architecture and environmental planning.

     MISCELLANEOUS: Attend bi-weekly staff meetings and
     other meetings or training sessions as relevant.

     QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from accredited library school or
equivalent educational experience. Minimum 2 years
successful experience providing specialized reference
service in architecture, city and regional planning, and/or
landscape architecture and environmental planning.
Commitment to public service and ability to interact
effectively with faculty, students, staff and other library
users. Demonstrated expertise in using electronic library
resources, including the World Wide Web, CD-ROM, etc.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally
and in writing. Ability to work well independently. Ability
to work well under pressure.
