ARL Newsletter Addresses Copyright and Fair Use in Digital Environments

In an effort to encourage the development of consensus within the
educational community around best practices, policies, and responsible
uses of copyrighted materials in the digital environments, ARL has
published a special issue of its newsletter devoted to this topic.
(June 1997, #192).

In addition to status reports on the Conference on Fair Use, the WIPO
process, and the U.S. and Canadian legislative efforts, the newsletter
also reports on two strategies for the education community to advance
this effort.

ARL is developing a clearinghouse of educational community experience
relating to copyright and fair use in the digital environment.
Librarians, faculty, technologists, and univerisity and society
publishers are all encouraged to alert ARL to existing or planned
policies, practices, or relevant activities at their institutions.
In addition, the community is encouraged to seek insitutional endorsement
for the NHA Basic Principles for Managing Intellectual Property in the
Digital Environment.

The special copyright issue of the ARL Newsletter includes reports about:

% Fallout from the Conference on Fair Use (CONFU)

% ARLUs specific concerns with the proposed fair use guidelines

% Ways the educational community can work toward consensus on
        copyright in the digital environment

% A showcase of Northwestern's e-reserve policies

% The NHA Basic Principles for Managing IP

% Reports on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
process including the controversial proposal for database protection

% U.S. and Canadian legislation updates
