Please excuse the cross posting and the long message, it's just more
efficient this way...

Hi, I am a Drexel University library science student looking to find out
more about image databases incorporated by library vendors like
Ameritech, CARL Corp., DRA, Geac Computers, VTLS, etc. in standard
automation packages.

My limited research has found that image collections are generally
treated as separate entities from the usual library book and serial
collections. Access to image collections is through a separate software
interface.

I am aware of separate commerially available relational databases such as
Cumulus, ImageAXS, EmBark, and even Microsoft Access and Filemaker Pro.
I am aware of the more experimental database products, some object
oriented and some both relational and object oriented, available from
Informx, Illustra, Excalibur, Ultimedia Manager, and XDP from Plexus.

I am also aware that the MARC format has incorporated field 856 for
remote access to images or Web pages and am interested to know what
results people have gotten from using it.

If anyone happens to either be familiar with an image database
commercially available through a library automation vendor and/or is
using one, then I would appreciate knowing about it and what stories you
have to share. I will be glad to share my responses with the lists.
Please respond to me personally. Thanks to all in advance.
