The Visual Arts Data Service, in partnership with the Art, Design,Architecture & Media Information Gateway, the Museum Documentation Association and the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network, held a workshop in March, to examine the descriptive information needed to enable the discovery of visual arts, museums and cultural heritage resources on the Internet, particularly in the form of digital images. The Workshop focussed on the usefulness of the Dublin Core metadata element set: *Deciding which resource discovery requirements were of 'core' significance *Mapping the core set, where possible, to the existing Dublin Core elements Indicating relevant specialist standards, terminology resources, syntaxes etc. *Considering the problems in a Dublin Core-like approach to the remaining elements *Considering issues related to introducing generic rather than subject-specific terminologies -- **Catherine Grout**Visual Arts Data Service** *Surrey Institute of Art & Design**Farnham* ******e-mail: [log in to unmask]******** *tel: 01252 722441 ex 2427*fax: 0125 712925*
