We now have a Xerox Liberator which is a re-engineered machine. Not perfect but it does protect the books. We had trouble with the machine at first and Xerox replaced it. Since then performance has been reasonable. Does double-sided coping, A3, reduction etc. and a few other things but not sorting. Not brilliant for images but it suffices. We keep a small, non-book copier for administrative copying, sorting, stapling etc.. There is now another model from Oce [don't know if that is available in the US] but I believe it does not do double-sided copying. A3 and reduction/enlargement may also be absent but I would have to check. I have not examined it but it is reported to be reliable and satisfactory from a quality point of view. I refuse to have a non-book model in the Research Library because of the value of some of our books and the damage which could be done. The high percentage of catalogues which have "perfect" binding is also a problem with flat copiers. [Re-binding is not cheap] People caught copying library books on other machines are not popular. J.
