Preliminary Program
        We all rely on electronic data, secure, we hope, from compromise.
Technology developments have surpassed social norms and ethics.  Who owns
data?  How can we verify accuracy of data, and verify that data are
authentic?  What can you do when data about you are incorrect or
misappropriated?  What values for privacy, data sharing, and ethical
responsibility will we need?  How can you protect your organization and its
information?

These are the concerns of the 1997 ASIS Mid Year meeting.  Following is the

Tentative title:  Cryptography =26 Electronic Records: Towards A Secure =
Society
        Herb Lin has been a senior staff officer with the Computer Science and
Telecommunications Board (CSTB) of the National Research Council (NRC)
since 1990.  Most recently, he was the staff originator of the CSTB/NRC
project =22For the Record: Protecting Electronic Health Information=22 and
director of the CSTB/NRC study entitled =22Cryptography's Role in Securing
the Information Society.=22  Lin has also had major responsibilities in past
CSTB/NRC studies on the future of computing as a discipline and the rights
and responsibilities of participants in networked communities.  From 1987
to 1990, he was a professional staff member for the House Armed Services
Committee.  Herb Lin received his Ph.D. in physics from M.I.T. in 1979.

Public Key Infrastructure and Certificates
        The increasing use of public key cryptography in business, and the new
security functionality it has enabled, has given rise to the need for a
sophisticated supporting technical and legal infrastructure. This session
examines the critical components of this infrastructure.
     This session will cover: PKI functions and standards=3B the technology
of the V3 enhanced X.509 public key certificates=3B  Certification
revocation=3B Certificate authority trust models=3B the rise of commercial
Trusted Third Party services=3B how non-repudiation needs to work in
conjunction with support from the legal profession=3B products and services
