----------------------------Original message---------------------------- A note to those who will be driving to the conference: There are several major functions occurring in San Antonio during the ARLIS conference which will make driving and parking in the downtown area difficult. We will be competeing with an expected 300,000 folks attending the Billy Graham Crusade April 3-6 and about 8000 for the International Carwash Association Conference April 4-7. I encourage all with automobiles to rely as much as possible on transportation provided by ARLIS to conference events and to use personal automobiles only when absolutely necessary, especially through Sunday April 6. There have been questions about the Monday evening speaker/event. Two events are planned for Monday evening April 7, will require on-site registration, and will have limits on attendance. The events are as follows: 1. Southwestern Bell's Collection of Twentieth-Century American Art Southwestern Bell's collection of twentieth-century American art (including works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Arthur Dove, Man Ray, Charles Sheeler, Stuart Davis, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Al Held, and Claes Oldenburg, to name a few) will be available for up to 150 conferees to tour at SBC's corporate offices just two blocks from the Crowne Plaza St. Anthony Hotel. SBC staff will rpovide three one-hour tours highlighting the major works in the collection. A copy of the catalog of the collection will be available at the registration desk for your perusal. Tour times are as follows and each tour will be limited to 50 participants. Directions to the collection will be provided upon registration. Transportation is on your own. Tour 1 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Tour 2 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm Tour 3 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm 2. Beyond the Stacks: A Behind-the-Scenes Introduction to the San Antonio Public Library and its Design Process Craig Zapatos, Central Library Manager, will conduct an in-depth tour of the new Central Library designed by Ricardo legorreta. Tour participants will have access to all public and non-public areas throughout the seven floors of the building. Mr. Zapatos has been involved with the project since its inception and will be able to provide information on the design competition, his involvement with the architectural team selected, the construction process, and the success of the project upon completion. One tour will be offered and will be limited to 60 participants. Directions to the San Antonio Public Library will be provided upon registration. Transportation is on your own. Tour Time 6:30 pm - 8:45 pm. I have also recieved a question about the phone number for Star Shuttle. The correct number is 1-800-341-6000. The number listed on the hotel reservation envelope [1-800-477-0427] is now the phone number for Star Shuttle in Houston. Please use 1-800-341-6000 if you need to contact Star Shuttle.
