----------------------------Original message---------------------------- 1998 VRA Annual Conference The sixteenth annual Visual Resources Association conference will take place Tuesday, March 3rd, through Saturday, March 7th, in Philadelphia. For the first time in many years, our meeting will overlap with the annual conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), which is scheduled for March 5th to 12th. ARLIS/NA is already set to meet at the Doubletree in downtown Philadelphia, and we are reviewing hotels in the same area. The VRA and ARLIS/NA conference planners will be working closely, once the ARLIS San Antonio conference is completed, to ensure coordination of efforts for Philadelphia. A VRA local arrangements committee is forming in Philadelphia. The head of the committee is Micheline Nilsen, and she can be contacted at the University of Philadelphia Fine Arts Library, 205/877-6327. The VRA executive board is now accepting session, roundtable, and workshop proposals for the 1998 conference. Sessions are generally two hours in length with relatively formal paper presentations by several speakers and, preferably, some time allowed for open discussion at the end. Roundtables are meant to be less formal, with the moderator in charge of directing a discussion about a particular topic. Workshops can vary from two hours to an entire day and, hopefully, involve some kind of hands-on teaching of a skill. Below are suggestions for each of these categories. However, please do not feel limited by these suggestions in any way. Session/Roundtable Ideas: successful funding proposals and information on how others can do the same; copyright; reference books for slide libraries; non-Academic image collections, educational resources for VR professionals (courses in art history and MLIS programs, language classes, tuition-exemption programs, technology workshops, books to read, etc.); philosophical issues related to cataloging and keyword access to images (e.g., should we identify artists as African-American, gay, female, etc.?); job hunting strategies in the VR profession; mentoring (employees, students; how much should we do?); the slide librarians role, if any, in developing course-related web sites; new VR professionals; copyright and/or other issues for Canadian slide curators; putting the "Criteria for Hiring and Retention..." to work for us; preparing effective policies and procedures and/or comparing notes on policies in different slide collections; discussion and comparison of listservs for visual resources and related fields (someone could prepare an annotated list as a handout); collection development policies; evaluating web resources; professional issues and/or our future as a profession; data standards; cataloging specific types of material (e.g., graphic design); administrative/ management skills for VR curators; digital imaging projects. Workshop Ideas: introductions to computer applications such as HTML, Page Mill, and PhotoShop (taught separately, of course); hands-on use and comparison of cataloging software such as Embark and Re:discovery; an introduction to researching funding sources al ong with guidance in choosing appropriate sources and outlining a proposal; writing a job description; MARC record cataloging of images Proposals are due by May 23rd so that the VRA executive board can review them at its mid-year meeting. Prospective session/roundtable moderators or workshop organizers should send a short written statement, no more than one page, to: Jeanette Mills, VRA Vice President, School of Art, University of Washington, Box 353440, Seattle, WA 98195-3440; or, fax to 206/685-1657. Please be sure to include all pertinent contact information and any A-V and/or computer equipment requirements. If you attended the 1997 VRA conference in New York and have not yet returned your conference questionnaire, please do so as soon as possible. Only about 10% of the attendees have responded so far; certainly many more of you have opinions to offer. The vice president and executive board value this input from the membership and use it to improve the next conference. Many of the suggestions for proposals noted above came directly from the questionnaires that have already been submitted. <*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*> JEANETTE C.
