A special award for outstanding reference publication was given to THE DICTIONARY OF ART, Jane Turner, editor; Hugh Brigstocke, consulting editor, (New York: Grove Dictionaries, Inc., 1996). The Wittenborn Book Award, established by ARLIS/NA in 1981, honors the memory of New York art book dealer and publisher George Wittenborn (1905-1974) who was a strong supporter of ARLIS/NA in its formative years. The awards are given annually to outstanding North American art publications which represent the highest standards in content, design and construction.
