Thursday, March 20th

Dear ARLIS/NA Colleagues,

At the upcoming 25th Annual Conference in San Antonio in two
weeks, the Executive Board will review the Conference on Fair
Use (CONFU) "Proposal for Fair Use of Digital Images" and
determine whether to endorse or not endorse these guidelines.
Over the past year ARLIS/NA members have participated in
the formulation, review, and dissemination of information re.
these guidelines.
* Gregg Most has served as ARLIS/NA's official representative
to the CONFU Digital Images Working Group;
* the Visual Resources Division has entertained discussion;
* arlis-l has supported lively debate;
* the Executive Board has remained attuned to the
developments, both within the Society and among affinity
agencies and associations.

The ARLIS/NA Public Policy Committee, chaired by Katy Poole
and Hinda Sklar, has been the principal working group assigned
to oversee CONFU developments, gather information and
opinions, and, ultimately, provide a report with
recommendations to be the basis for the Executive Board's final
deliberations and decision on endorsement or non-endorsement.
The Public Policy Committee's report, with appendices including
various other reports, documents, and related information
sources, is now available through the ARLIS/NA web site,

http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/arlis

in the "News" section.

The Report is a very thorough, useful, and informative document, and I
take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of
the Public Policy Committee and to thank them very much.
I invite all ARLIS/NA members, or other subscribers to arlis-l,
to review the Report, and to send comments
** DIRECTLY TO ME**
prior to the San Antonio conference, by Tuesday, April 1st.

I have appended here the report's table of contents.

Thanks very much.
