POSITION AVAILABLE:
 Two full-time, tenure track, 12-month Reference Librarians

THE UNIVERSITY:
 California State University, Hayward occupies 342 acres in the
 Hayward hills, affording a panoramic view of nearly the entire San
 Francisco Bay Area.  Cal State Hayward's proximity to the major Bay
 Area cities provides unique cultural opportunities including museums,
 art galleries, aquariums, planetariums, plays, musicals, sports
 events, and concerts.  Its nearness to the Pacific Ocean and Sierra
 Nevada Mountains offers recreational diversion as well as excellent
 laboratories for educational studies.  The nine major buildings
 contain 150 classrooms and teaching laboratories, 177 specialized
 instructions rooms, several student-oriented computer labs, and a
 library which contains a collection of over one million items
 accessible through HAYSTAC, its online catalog.  The University has
 an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students with 600 faculty.
 CSUH is organized into four schools:  Arts, Letters, and Social
 Sciences; Business and Economics; Education and Allied Studies; and
 Science.  The University offers bachelor's degrees in 37 fields and
 master's degrees in 23 (in addition to Special Majors).  Other
 programs lead to teaching, specialist, pupil personnel services, and
 administrative services credentials.   CSUH also operates the Contra
 Costa Campus, a branch center in Concord, which provides full
 instructional support for over 2,500 upper-division and graduate
 students.

THE LIBRARY:
 The University Library supports the instructional, reference and
 research needs of a culturally diverse campus community.   In
 addition to its print holdings, the Library provides access to a
 growing array of databases including NEXIS/LEXIS, the Dow Jones
 News/Retrieval System, OCLC FirstSearch databases, and various CD-ROM
 products.   The Library also provides access to the World Wide Web
 and other Internet resources.   The successful candidates will join
 12 tenured librarians in the Instructional and Interpretive Services
 unit.

DUTIES OF THE POSITIONS:
 As members of the Library Faculty and working in a collegial
 environment, the successful candidates will participate in
 instruction and the development of instructional materials, develop
 the library's collections and services for assigned disciplines in
 either science or business, work in a cooperative centralized
 reference environment which requires evening and weekend hours, be
 active on Library and University committees, and demonstrate
 professional growth.  Instruction includes the Library's
 course-for-credit, classroom lectures, database demonstrations, and
 Internet workshops.   The positions include possible rotation service
 at the University's Contra Costa Campus library.

QUALIFICATIONS:
 Candidates must have earned a graduate degree from an American
 Library Association accredited institution or an equivalent
 professional library degree, demonstrated ability to work with
 faculty and students in a culturally diverse environment, excellent
 interpersonal communication skills, and demonstrated skill in using
 electronic information resources.  Preference will be given to
 applicants with a degree in (or having significant experience working
 with) a science or business discipline, and with a record of previous
 successful experience in reference, bibliographic instruction, and
 collection development in an academic library, and a demonstrated
 commitment to service excellence.

RANK AND SALARY:
 Assistant Librarian - Senior Assistant Librarian.  Hiring
 classification and salary are dependent upon educational preparation
 and experience.  Subject to budgetary authorization.

 Anticipated date of appointment is September 1, 1997.
