COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND THE ARTS, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO (UIC)
Position Available

The Director is responsible for the continued development and management of
a collection of more than 300,000 slide images of visual materials, the
supervision of a staff that includes one full-time FTE and a number of
student workers, and the development and management of a digitized image
library with its attendant, user-accessible database.  The Director reports
to the Dean of the College of Architecture and the Arts.

Collection development and management entails:

-- preparing budgets in consultation with the Dean and allocating resources
within the  slide collection;
-- carrying out collection development policies, which are subject to review
and revision, in consultation  with the faculty of the College;
-- providing reference services to users of the collection;
-- supervising the filing of circulated slides
-- classifying and filing new slides and weeding the collection;
-- developing and maintaining a computerized database of the images in the
    collection;
-- supervising the addition and conversion of images to digital archival
formats.


Additional responsibilities include:  development of a College-wide
constituency among faculty in all areas of the arts, architecture and
design, expanding contributions and uses;  development of a new,
user-searchable database to speed input and access of information;
development and implementation of long-range goals of increased electronic
access, distance learning, and digital image archiving.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A graduate degree in art history, history, or other
arts-related field, or M.L.S. is required.  Familiarity with all three areas
of art history, the arts, and librarianship is preferred.   The preferred
candidate will be conversant with a broad range of materials within the
history of the arts, architecture and design; will have library experience
and conversance with user-searchable image-access database management; will
display organizational skills, a strong visual sensibility, and the ability
and interest in technologies appropriate to management, archiving, and
presentation of visual materials; and will have the enthusiasm and strong
interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse faculty of
artists, historians, and critics.

Salary commensurate with education and experience.   Starting date: August
1, 1997.
