I hope the following information will be helpful. This is the
scoop on state tax exemptions for conference hotel bills per
the VRA's accountant and our contact at the conference hotel in
New York. For the ARLIS conference, if your institution is
paying your hotel bill and has an exemption certificate from
the state of Texas you should be able to present a copy of it
at hotel registration and not have to pay Texas state taxes on
your room. The fact that your institution may be non-profit is
not the entire picture; it must also have a certificate from
Texas. If your institution does enough business in Texas to
warrant the paperwork, they may indeed have such a
certificate. The exemption must be acquired state by state.
