The first one in New York City was very biased, filled with erroneous information, and rights holders presented then left, not bothering to stay around to hear the educator and librarian point of view. Each town hall meeting is being coordinated by a difference person, so the organizer's point of view will be reflected in the speakers chosen. The Indianapolis town hall meeting will be organized by Kenny Crews, a librarian and an attorney who takes a strong, but not ardent, position favorable to fair use. The Portland meeting will be organized by Christine Sundt, who also takes a strong fair use or educator's point of view. The New York town hall meeting began with three presentations that did not recognize fair use as an important part of the law and a critical element in education. Two of those presenters were from AAM (see below). The Multimedia Teleconference of Feb. 20th was also heavily criticized for its biased point of view. It was seen primarily as a lobbying effort by rights holders to get educational organizations and institutions to sign on. The controversial portions of the guidelines, their impact on the future of information dissemination and classroom teaching were not discussed. Be an informed and critical viewer whatever your position. Notice language designed to make you believe that the guidelines must be followed, that they have been drawn up by equal representation of all points of view, that they are fair.
