St. Petersburg statue: This would be the colossal equestrian statue of Peter
the Great, erected on Senate Square at the command of Catherine the Great. It
was commissioned from Falconet, and is referred to in the title of Pushkin's
famous poem "The Bronze Horseman". There's a good discussion of the statue,
the poem, and of the history of the city in the current New York Review of
Books, 2/20/97.
