----------------------------Original message---------------------------- NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART Vacancy Announcement No. 97-15 Closing date: 3/14/97 COMPUTER SPECIALIST, GS-334-12 SALARY RANGE: $45,939-$59,725 P/A The National Gallery of Art Library is seeking a computer specialist to serve on the staff of the Deputy Director under the supervision of the Administrative Librarian. The Library division of 40 employees supports the curatorial and research needs of the Gallery staff and visiting scholars, and includes three distinct collections. The Library contains a wide-ranging collection of more than 200,000 books and periodicals on the history, theory, and criticism of art and architecture, with an emphasis on Western art from the Middle Ages to the present and American art from the colonial era to the present. The Photographic Archives holds more than seven million black and white images of painting, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts. The Slide Library has approximately 160,000 slides of painting, sculpture, architecture and the decorative arts. Information about all three collections is available onsite through VTLS, the local system in operation since 1988. DUTIES: The incumbent is responsible for the successful planning, development, acquisition, implementation, evaluation, operation, and maintenance of automated systems, services and new technologies in the Library to support the research needs of the Gallery staff and clientele. In this capacity, the incumbent serves as manager of library automation projects, coordinating and directing the work of committees and task forces involving library automation and information technology; installs and assists with testing of library system software upgrades and new releases; and provides essential hardware and software support for library systems and maintains an awareness of trends and developments in library automation systems and related technologies. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for GS-334-12. This requires having at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in responsibility to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that demonstrated accomplishment of computer project assignments requiring a wide range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques pertinent to library automation systems and local area networks. Federal status candidates must meet the time-in-grade requirements of having been at the GS-11 level for at least one year.
