As many of you know the annual conference of the College Art Association will be held in New York City from February 12 - 15, 1997 at the Hilton Hotel (1335 Avenue of the Americas) in Manhattan. Unfortunately, there is no jointly sponsored ARLIS/CAA session at this year's conference, but one is lined up for teh 1998 CAA conference in Toronto, Canada. General news about the 1997 CAA conference: Registration deadline is Jan. 10, 1997, but people may also register on site the first day of the conference. Sessions for the 85th annual conference range in subject matter from "Walt Disney and American Visual Culture;" "Totalitarian Cultures and Their Audiences;" and "In/Versions, Sub/Versions, Per/Versions: New Versions of the Past" to "Richard Krautheimer's Legacy," "Exposing Byzantium on the Occasion of The Metropolitan Exhibition," and "Ripeness Is All: Metaphors of the Classical Norm in Ancient Art." Philippe de Montebello, Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be the keynote speaker for the convocation on Friday, Feb. 14, 1997, 5:30pm in the East Ballroom of the NY Hilton. The title of de Montebello's talk will be "Musings on Museums." There is an article on him in the CAA Newsletter v.21, no.6 (November/December 1996): 1-2. The Committee on Women in the Arts will honor sculptor Louise Bourgeois at a commemorative breakfast on Thursday, Feb. 13, 7:30-9:00am. Pre-registration for the breakfast with advance conference registration is required. $25.00 This year the conference will hold its first annual artist interviews with Faith Ringgold and Miriam Schapiro. Inter- views will be on Thursday from 2:30pm - 5pm. Session added to conference (not in preliminary program): CAA Education Committee will present a session entitled: "Alternative Modes of Pedagogy: Theory and Practice in Teaching Art History," on Sat., Feb. 15, 1997, 12:30-2:00 pm. The session will take the form of a panel discussion and workshop. Conference tours include evening trips to: Blue Mountain Gallery, Yeshiva University Museum, American Craft Museum, Cooper-Hewitt, Hunter College Art Galleries, Illustration House, Inc., Jewish Museum, New York Studio School, Americas Society Art Gallery, Clementine Gallery, Coopre Union, Museum for African Art, National Academy of Design, Pierpont Morgan Library, Studio Museum in Harlem, Thread Waxing Space, Marlborough Gallery, Institute for Contemporary Art - P.S. 1 Museum. A post-conference trip on Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997 will visit New Brunswick, NJ for a tour of the Johnson & Johnson world headwuarters designed by IM Pei and Partners; the Mason Gross School of Arts Galleries; the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper; and the Jan Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, State University of New Jersey. Bus leaves NYC at 10am and returns at 5pm Pre-registration with advance conference registration is required. $25.00 Valentine's Day Party, February 14, 1997. Hosted by CAA President, Leslie King Hammond. A silent auction will benefit the Professional Development Fellowsh Program. The party will be held after the convocation, 8-11pm, at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in SoHo. Tickets: $35 for general admission; $100 for "Sweethearts." Sweethearts receive a limited-edition Valentine created by a CAA artist. The silent auction will take place throughout the evening and will feature 75-100 unique prizes on which guests may bid.
