----------------------------Original message----------------------------
I am a graduate student in the library science program at the University
of South Florida. I am doing research on alternate forms of cataloging in
art libraries of every kind--museum, academic, public, etc. While much
has been done in the way of alternate cataloging for prints, multimedia,
graphics, etc., I am having a very difficult time finding any information
on alternate forms of cataloging of books in art libraries.

To date, the only information I have been able to amass has been
information from Linda McKee at the Ringling Art Museum Library. Prior to
1982, the former librarian used a system known as the Frick cataloging
system. (Many of their items in the library are still in this system and
in the process of being recataloged into LC.) Linda was able to explain
to me the basic principle behind it, however she herself is unaware of the
history of the cataloging system itself.

I would appreciate any help from all of you. At this point, I am looking
for the following information:
        1) any information regarding this Frick Cataloging system
                (I'm hoping those of you from the Frick itself might
                be able to help me with this!);
        2) any information regarding other alternate forms of cat-
                aloging of books in art libraries;
        3) any primary and secondary sources in print ANYWHERE that
                describes alternate forms of cataloging of books in
                art libraries

While I would appreciate your responses to me directly, it might be of
interest to everyone on the listserv to see what others around the world
have to say. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
