     PRESERVATION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS

     Deterioration of photographic materials is a significant concern in
     library and archival collections.  This full-day introductory workshop
     discusses means of preserving photographic materials based on
     real-world issues and situations.

     Among the topics covered:
      photographic materials and processes
      issues with prints, color, film, glass, albums, etc.
      environment and storage guidelines
      handling guidelines
      housing guidelines
      exhibition guidelines
      duplication/reformatting
      new technologies
      collection maintenance/preservation planning

     Examples of housing supplies, photographic materials and deteriorated
     photographs will be provided.  Workshop format is primarily lecture
     with ample time for questions.

     PARTICIPANTS
     The workshop is designed for those who have photograph collections and
     will be particularly significant for those who are responsible for the
     care or use of these materials.

     INSTRUCTOR
     Andrew Robb,  Photograph Conservator.  Mr. Robb is currently a
     photograph conservator in private practice providing preservation
     planning, collection surveys, and individual treatment for historic
     and contemporary photographs in both fine art and archival
     collections.  His clients include:  Library of Congress, the National
     Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of American History.
     He received a M.S. in Art Conservation with a major in photograph
     conservation and a minor in paper conservation from the University of
     Delaware/Winterthur Art Conservation Program.  He also was the primary
     author of text on the care and preservation of photographs for a
     prototype CD-ROM being developed by the Getty Conservation Institute.
