As the CONFU (Conference for Educational Fair Use) Digital Image Working
Group nears the end of their extensive work in seeking to develop a set
of guidelines, we would like to update you on this process and encourage
your input at this critical time.

* ARLIS/NA has been actively participating in the CONFU Digital Image
Working Group through the contributions of representative, Gregory P.J.
Most, National Gallery of Art, who has been ARLIS/NA's CONFU
representative since late May when he began attending the working group
sessions in Wash., DC. The Public Policy Committee has been grateful for
some good input received thus far from several interested individuals
and this has been passed along to Gregory.

* The Public Policy Committee posted two messages, July 9 and Sept. 11,
soliciting comments and reactions from ARLIS/NA members, particularly
visual resources curators as those most likely to be directly affected
by the guidelines.

* The final report of the ARLIS/NA CONFU representative and input from
ARLIS/NA members will be integral to the Public Policy Committee's
current deliberations in developing a report and a recommendation for
approval or rejection of the CONFU guidelines. This report will be
forwarded for review by the ARLIS/NA Executive Board as they consider
their decision.

* The CONFU Guidelines are available for review at these Web sites:
Draft, 9/30/96:

Draft, 10/22/96:

* Several Web sites provide an overview of Copyright and Fair Use
issues, including:

We would very much like this process to be representative of the ARLIS/NA
membership. Please make time now to consider the potential significant
impact of these CONFU guidelines and send us your comments. We look
forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

ARLIS/NA, Public Policy Committee
