Elisabeth Fairman Associate Curator for Rare Books Yale Center for British Art ---------- The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, a London-based research centre affiliated with Yale University, seeks an experienced and enthusiastic librarian to direct the growth and operation of the reference library at Bedford Square. The collection consists of ca. 10,000 book titles, 30 current serial subscriptions, and a photographic archive of British paintings and sculpture (ca. 100,000 photographs). The librarian will be responsible for providing reference services and research assistance, acquisitions of new materials, and organization and cataloging of the collections, including the photographic archives. The applicant should have a degree in art history or related subject and a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies, together with several years experience in an academic or museum library. Thorough knowledge of art historical research methods and tools is essential, as is a familiarity with new library technology so the library's operation can be improved. The applicant should have experience of bibliographic databases and Internet searching; knowledge of cataloging standards, including AACR2, MARC, subject headings and classification schedules (Library of Congress preferred). Applicant must be able to work well with scholars, students and colleagues. Good oral and written communication skills required. The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art was founded in 1970 through a grant from Paul Mellon to Yale University. It is the sister institution to the Yale Center for British Art, which houses Mr. Mellon's collection of British Art. The Mellon Centre in London has two complementary purposes: to contribute to the understanding of British painting, sculpture and architecture and to provide scholars with facilities to study British art and culture in London. The Centre organizes international conferences and research seminars, awards grants to institutions and individuals and publishes a series of scholarly books under the terms of an agreement with Yale University Press. The Yale-in-London program offers courses in British art, history, and literature for American undergraduates. Salary minimum #18,000. Participation in a non-contributory pension scheme is available.
