Dear Colleagues,
Two important ARLIS/NA mailings are on their way to you
from HQ. They are:
   1. Executive Board ballots and Bylaws revisions ballots, mailed
this past week, and
   2. Membership renewal forms to be mailed within the next
two weeks.

Your membership assists in maintaining the financial stability of
the Society. Fiscal Year 1997 begins on October 1, 1996, with
a balanced budget of approximately one-quarter million dollars.
With limited resources this important document is carefully
designed to sustain member services including publications,
meetings and conferences, electronic communications, mentoring
and networking, advocacy in professional issues, professional
development and educational programming, etc.

The membership renewal form has been revised and expanded
this year in order to begin systematically gathering data on
individual members' interests, skills, and needs. Loaded into the
Society's new membership database, this data will be a
tremendous boon in matching members' expertise to working
groups and special appointment, to providing vital mentoring
services, and to designing programs and activities addressing
members' expressed needs. Please take an additional few
minutes to provide the requested information at the bottom of
the form; also, PLEASE confirm the accuracy and completeness
of the pre-printed information on your form.

A major benefit of ARLIS/NA membership is the opportunity
to participate in the Society's working groups. Volunteers lead
and serve on 22 committees, 17 Divisions, Sections, and Round
Tables, 20 chapters, a dozen special appointments, and the
Executive Board. These groups provide 300 leadership positions
for members to plan and implement all of the Society's activities
and special initiatives.

Every individual member may also participate in the governance
of the Society by voting in the annual elections. The 1996
Nominating Committee has gathered an excellent slate of
candidates: we will have difficult choices to make!

Revision of the Society's Bylaws is another individual member
benefit provided through ballot approval. This year SEVEN
specific changes or additions have been identified to clarify and
strengthen this fundamental document.

Please vote! ARLIS/NA is energetic and creative in as much as
its members participate and volunteer at all levels and types of
Society activities.
