----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Excuse duplication in cross postings.

Our college librarian received this memo recently, and it may interest some
people on this list, perhaps some past UQ students circulating out there,
or anyone genuinely concerned for art history in a tertiary setting?

To: All Art History Students Past and Present

From: Margaret Maynard

Date: 17 Oct 1996

Subject:Art History Department, University of Queensland.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have receieved a letter informing me that as from 1997 the Art History
Department will be closed and the discipline be relocated in the Department
of English. we are very concened about this move which has been decided
without fomal consultation with either the Department of English or Art
History.

The Department of English shares our concerns and supports this letter to
you. It is unclear whether any consideration has been given in this
decision to the future of our courses, our location, funding or the welfare
of our students in this decision. Our Future status is unclear. Such
disregard for our discipline is unlikely to occur in any other comparable
cities in Europe and America.

We are asking the University for a wokring party to be set up, to considre
the future of our department and our discipline. We take issue with how
this process has occurred up until now and are anxious to intervene so that
it can be effectively managed. We are asking for a year in which to
negotiate, with all parties, a secure future for our department.

We intend to teach all courses in 1997 as previously planned.

If you feel able, we would very much appreciate your support in writing at
this difficult time.

You can write or fax Professor Ted Brown, Deputy Vice-Chancellor
