----------------------------Original message---------------------------- VISUAL RESOURCES CURATOR, Art & Architecture Library, Yale University Classification: Curator III, M&P 24 THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of colleagues, faculty and students in a variety of contexts conducive to staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects which include network access to scholarly information and a range of imaging initiatives. The Art & Architecture Library serves several distinguished programs, including the Schools of Architecture, Art and Drama; the Department of the History of Art; the Yale Center for British Art; the Yale University Art Gallery; and the entire Yale and New Haven community. A new Arts Library is presently under design as part of a master plan for the Yale arts area, and will be related to a new Digital Imaging Center, one core program of which will be the creation of an image database serving the arts area and the campus community. The Art & Architecture Library incorporates the Slides and Photographs Collection of 315,000 study slides and 183,000 study photographs. The Art & Architecture Library seeks a creative and imaginative Visual Resources Curator to manage the aggressive implementation of digital technologies in support of the several programs the Library serves. THE POSITION Working with arts area faculty, curators, staff and students, the Visual Resources Curator will be directly engaged with the implementation of digital services to the arts area community, as administrator, instructor and resource manager. The Visual Resources Curator reports to the head of the Art & Architecture Library. RESPONSIBILITIES Participates as a member of a team in planning and delivering the educational programs and services of a Digital Imaging Center presently under design as part of a master plan for the Yale arts area. Develops a coherent plan for managing the aggressive, phased migration of a collection of ca. 500,000 art and architecture study images from analog (slide and photograph) format to digital format, while ensuring the provision of ongoing services to users of the Slides and Photographs Collection. Manages the resources of the Slides and Photographs Collection, supervising one professional slide librarian. Directs acquisitions, cataloging, collection management, preservation, and circulation and reserve activities and coordinates public service needs with supervisory staff of the Art & Architecture Library. Supervises the work of image database systems staff, addressing especially such issues as intellectual access, vocabulary control, cataloging protocols and image quality. The Visual Resources Curator will prepare budgets as well as program and grant proposals, will collaborate with faculty, staff and students in support of teaching and research, will serve on committees and participate in library planning activities and will be expected to be active professionally. QUALIFICATIONS Master's degree in architecture, design, fine arts or the history of art, or MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school; 4 years of progressively advanced experience in the administration and management of photographic or visual research collections in a university, museum, or other curatorial environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated commitment to user services. Demonstrated experience in educating staff and users in the use and benefits of new technologies. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with library staff and the academic and scholarly community. Demonstrated and thorough knowledge of current practices, developments and issues in library and visual resources technology and digital imaging. Ability to comprehend and direct the programming and database design activities of systems staff. Demonstrated experience in management of human and financial resources. Preferred: MLS plus Master's degree in the field of architecture, design, fine arts, or the history of art. Thorough familiarity with the fine arts, the history of art and architecture. Reading knowledge of two foreign languages. Computer science education or experience. SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary from a minimum of $35,800 and full benefits package available.
