----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Dear members, Our library is part of a large multi-site University Library sytem that has a policy of not lending its periodicals. We are considering requesting that this policy be amended to allow 'art & design' periodicals to be borrowed by students and staff of that Faculty. They frequently need to use facilities not provided within our library in order to make color photocopies or computer images of periodical illustrations and at present we "unofficially" allow 2 hour loans via an informal system of holding their library card with a written slip contain the periodical details. This is not only messy but contravenes library loans policy!( What "rebels"?! ) The alternative for us is lots of frustrated users who are tempted to consider periodical mutilation or theft. I'd be interested in hearing from any of you who work in University Libraries which allow art periodicals to be borrowed. Could you provide any policy/procedural advice or general comments on our proposed course of action? Our loans system is automated ( we use GEAC Advance ) and systems staff are not keen to add lots of periodical barcodes to our already heavily loaded system. Thanks, Annette Sullivan Deputy TAFE Librarian RMIT Carlton Library Melbourne, Australia.
