Living Document systems are a way to store information that changes over
time. They are structured in such a way as to allow growth and evolution
in their structures. This paper investigates the background of Living
Document systems as the combination of Computer Supported Collaborative
Work (CSCW) and hypertext systems. It outlines a proposal for adding
context and communication to Living Document systems, thus enhancing their
use in group work. It also describes a system to enable users to seed
these Living Documents. It concludes that evaluative work on the utility
of Living Documentation and the development of more sophisticated
hypertext browsers may be needed before advanced Living Document systems
can be fully endorsed as aids to group work.
