Library Technician - Cataloging (Temporary)

The Archives of American Art (AAA), a bureau of the Smithsonian
Institution, has a temporary/contractual opening for a cataloging
technician to work on the retrospective conversion of AAA's manual
name authority file to the USMARC Format for Authority Data, in the
Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS), an
automated database maintained on Notis, an integrated library
management system.

The work is, in part, a continuation of AAA's retrospective
cataloging project, which, over four years, transferred
descriptions of collections from AAA's card catalog into SIRIS. The
inclusion of an automated authority file is the last phase of the
project. A provisional authorities database created by an outside
contractor serves as the basis for the work to be done.

MAJOR DUTIES:
Searches the provisional record name heading in the Anglo-American
Authority File (AAAF) to verify that it is not included in the
national file.

Completes provisional authority records by adding or changing fixed
and variable fields using information found in AAA's manual
authority file, manual and automated reference sources, and if
necessary, in AAA collections on microfilm or at remote storage.
Information may include tracings in the form of earlier or later
names, citations to sources in which the information about the
authorized form of the name was found, biographical data, and coded
data necessary for machine processing.

REQUIREMENTS:
The preferred applicant will have experience with online
bibliographic databases and the specialized role of authority files
in a library or archival setting; knowledge of nationally accepted
standards for library or archival cataloging rules and
bibliographic tools, especially Anglo-American Cataloging Rules,
2nd ed.; knowledge of the USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data and
USMARC Format for Authorities Data; and knowledge of online and
manual biographical and historical research tools, preferably in
art history or American history.

FEE/HOURS: The contract hourly rate is from $10.00-$14.00 an hour,
depending on experience. Benefits are not included. Hours are
flexible between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with a minimum
of 20 hours per week. The contract duration is approximately 6 to
11 months depending upon hourly rate and number of hours worked.

TO APPLY: Interested applicants should send their resume to Karen
Weiss, Archives of American Art, 7th and F Sts. N.W., Balcony 331,
