ART DOCUMENTATION Editor

The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) is seeking a new editor
for its semi-annual journal ART DOCUMENTATION.  Published since 1982, ART
DOCUMENTATION includes articles, columns, and book reviews critical to the
interests of art librarians and visual resources curators.

The editor of ART DOCUMENTATION is responsible for its intellectual content and
coordinates all submissions for final publication.  In addition, the editor may
initiate special articles and theme issues, working with authors to ensure high
quality and stimulating content.

Applicants should possess a broad background in art librarianship and/or visual
resources; have excellent writing and organizational skills; and have the
ability to work with submissions in various electronic formats.  Previous
writing, editing, and publishing experience is highly desirable.  Attendance at
the Society annual meeting is required.  This is a voluntary opportunity which
carries with it an annual honorarium and reimbursement of expenses.  Reporting
to the president of ARLIS/NA, the position is renewable biennially.

The editor will work closely with other personnel in the production of each
issue of ART DOCUMENTATION:  a copy editor who edits the manuscripts and proofs
the galleys; the executive director of ARLIS/NA who serves as production
manager; the book review editor and column editors; as well as with the ARLIS/NA
Executive Board.

Duties:

1/  Solicits special articles and develops theme issues for ART DOCUMENTATION
        a)  Works with guest editors and authors to ensure high quality and
appropriateness of content
        b)  Coordinates review of articles by outside readers, when appropriate
        c)  Accepts or rejects unsolicited manuscripts as appropriate

2/  Selects cover art to coordinate with content of special articles and books
reviewed and obtains reproduction permission.

3/  Communicates with authors to discuss their work and the recommended changes.

4/  Obtains from authors any necessary components of the publication
(illustrations, footnotes, permissions, etc.) that have not been submitted.

5/  Supervises book review section.  Works with book review editor to select
books, reviewers, and themes.

6/  Supervises other column editors.

7/  Contributes editorials as appropriate.

8/  Forwards manuscripts, notes, illustrations, etc., to copy editor for final
editing.

9/  Reviews production galleys.

10/  Works with the Executive Board, copy editor, book review editor, executive
director, Publications Committee, and ARLIS/NA UPDATE editor to develop ideas
and guidelines for ART DOCUMENTATION and ARLIS/NA UPDATE.
