----------------------------Original message----------------------------
While reading over the ARLIS/NA Strategic Plan March 1996 Working Draft on the
plane to Miami, part of Item 2.G.3, "create inventory and clearinghouse of
teaching materials and bibliographies," caught my eye. There is already an
organization, LOEX, that does just this sort of thing. LOEX stands for Library
Orientation Information and Exchange or something along that line; their
newsletter (published quarterly) is called, "LOEX News: Quarterly Newsletter of
the National Library Orientation Exchange: LOEX Clearinghouse for Library
Instruction." When I mentioned LOEX in several conference meetings, there were
many ARLIS/NA members who had not heard of LOEX, so I thought it would be
worthwhile to post this information to ARLIS-L. I've attached LOEX's statement
of purpose from their web page below, along with the URL. Anyone interested
can get more information directly from LOEX.

Institutional membership to LOEX is $60/year and includes the quarterly
newsletter, which is very helpful. The newsletter always has a "To Read"
section of new BI-related journal articles and a "To Borrow" section of new or
recommended materials they've received. It's a very worthwhile organization,
as many ARLIS/NA members will attest to, I'm sure, and anyone involved in BI
would benefit. In fact, I have on my desk right now a stack of materials on
training students and support staff for reference work, and some of the
materials are terrific.

I also urge ARLIS/NA members to contribute their BI and library orientation
materials to LOEX; anyone can contribute. If you're particularly proud of your
handouts or training materials (and I know our members have some good ones),
send 'em in!

LOEX is a self-supporting, non-profit educational clearinghouse for
all sorts of materials used in library instruction. We provide
information on all aspects of instruction to libraries and librarians
who are institutional members. This includes print materials such as
one page point-of-use handouts, bibliographies and subject guides,
pathfinders, materials for workshops, course syllabi, workbooks,
exercises, tests, and evaluation forms. We also collect instructional
videos and software, slide-tape presentations, and audiotapes, NOTIS
materials, instruction for other online catalogs, instruction for
various CD-ROM products, and just about anything that has an instructional use
in a library.

These materials are donated by member
libraries and librarians. We
have very few commercially produced items. Most things are free and may be
copied and used freely. The more members we have, the
larger our information pool. In late 1994, LOEX had approximately 600 member
libraries in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Europe,
Australia, Israel, Lebanon, and South Africa.

LOEX also sponsors an annual library instruction
conference each May. This conference focuses on current issues in instruction
and the
proceedings are published.

Members and potential members may request materials by mail, phone, fax, or on
the Internet at the numbers listed above. If you would like more information on
LOEX, please fill out the form below.
