----------------------------Original message---------------------------- The next issue of Update (the "July" issue) is the conference issue. The idea is to publish short reports on ALL conference sessions. So far I have reports for about a third of the sessions. So, if you were a RECORDER for any meeting of a committee, division, section, round table, or any other interest group, or sponsored session, please send me a report as quickly as possible. (The deadline was June 10; I'll bet this is news to most of you!) IF YOU WERE A MODERATOR OF A SESSION, PLEASE MAKE SURE THE RECORDER IS PREPARING A REPORT. (If there was no recorder, please prepare a report--or find someone else who can. And please let me know who will prepare the report. Do you sense desperation in any of this? I'm including a copy of the guidelines to efficiency's sake. And thanks! Linda Zieper GUIDELINES FOR REPORTS OF MEETINGS FROM THE ARLIS/NA ANNUAL CONFERENCE: CONTENT: Reports of meetings should stress factual material. When did the meeting take place? Who were the major speakers? What was said? What actions were taken? Begin the reports with the official title listed in the program. Include the date of the meeting in the heading. Report should also include the names of presenters, affiliations, and topics; sponsor of the session; summary of presentations. Please take great care with names. Spelling can be checked in the conference program and in the HANDBOOK AND LIST OF MEMBERS. Sign the report with your name and your institutional affiliation (or place of residence). Bear in mind that for colleagues who were unable to attend, this will be the way they can learn what happened at the session and benefit from it. STYLE: Formal prose style is appropriate. Colorful opening sentences are encouraged, but color should not obscure the basic factual data. THESE ARE REPORTS, NOT MINUTES. You need not list all attendees. Not every contribution need be recorded. Emphasize major points of the meeting. When referring to a person, use the full name for the first reference. Thereafter use Mrs. Jones or Jones. Please do not use first names alone (e.g., Sally said... ). Please keep jargon to a minimum. When introducing an acronym, write out the full form of the name at the first mention, and append the acronym to it (e.g., Research Libraries Group, RLG). FORMAT: Reports may be submitted to the UPDATE editor by electronic mail (preferred),U.S. Mail, or fax. Items may also be submitted on diskette. Reports should be no longer than 750. words (3 double-spaced typewritten pages.) Shorter is better. Reports submitted on paper or faxed should be double-spaced; reports submitted by e-mail or diskette should be single spaced. double-spaced typewritten pages). Recorders should follow the style guidelines provided by the CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE, most current edition, and THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE by William Strunk and E.B. White. _______________________________________ Reports should be sent AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (the deadline was JUNE 10, 1996 to: Linda Zieper, Editor, ARLIS/NA UPDATE, University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth Library, North Dartmouth, MA 02747; 508-999-8526 phone; 508-996-9759 fax; [log in to unmask] (e-mail).
