Subject: ARLIS/NY Cataloging Discussion Group May Meeting Notes

The Cataloging Discussion Group of ARLIS/NY met at the Frick Art
Reference Library on Monday, May 22 to discuss "Collection-Level
Cataloging."

A brief report was given on a report, dated April 1996, concerning
collection-level cataloging prepared by the "Inaccessible Domanin"
Materials Working Group of the RLG Art and Architecture Group.
Sample collection-level records in RLIN prepared for the InDoMat
report are retrievable in RLIN with the title phrase search
"indomat demonstration."

Mention was made of new LC guidelines for collection-level cataloging,
updating those circulated in 1989 and 1991, which may appear in a
forthcoming issue of LC's Cataloging Service Bulletin.

Lengthy discussion followed concerning levels of description and
access for collection-level records.

A suggestion was made that a standard form for describing artists'
files--where none now exists--might be proposed and agreed upon
which would be useful to catalogers providing access to such
material, and to those seeking to retrieve it. Artist files are
not uncommon collections in art libraries.

The next two meetings of the discussion group are planned for
June 24, on the topic of "Training Library Assistants," and for
August 5. Location and starting times for the meetings will be
posted to the list before each meeting.
