HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP (HPG) SYMPOSIUM JUNE 6-8, 1997 TO BE HELD AT MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE PURCHASE, NEW YORK After a hiatus of several years, the History of Photography Group is organizing an international symposium focusing on various aspects of the production and dissemination of photographic images in both the 19th and 20th centuries. As in the past, we anticipate wide interdisciplinary participation. ---Call for Papers-- Proposals are now being solicited for 30-minute, illustrated presentations. Art historians, historians, curators, archivists, regionalists, area studies specialists, collectors, dealers, etc., are encouraged to submit. Preference will be given to new work, not previously published or presented. Potential speakers are invited to submit TWO COPIES of a one to two page (double-spaced) abstract, along with a resume to either of the co-chairs by October 15, 1996; selections will be finalized in early November. Registration and meal fees will be waived for speakers. --The Symposium-- The symposium will take place the weekend of June 6-8, 1997. Tentative plans include a welcoming reception Friday evening, an all-day symposium on Saturday, and an evening event Saturday night. Manhattanville College is located in Westchester County, a 35-minute train ride from midtown Manhattan. The campus is easily accessed via Amtrak and Metro North trains, the White Plains Airport, and by car from Interstates 95 and 287. Symposium information and registration forms will be mailed in early January to all individuals in the HPG data base. Others interested in receiving the mailing should contact either of the co-chairs. Editors, authors and publishers of photo-related books and journals who plan to attend the conference are invited to contact the co-chairs to request display space. --The History of Photography Group-- The History of Photography Group began in the mid-80s as a loosely organized professional group to facilitate communication among historians of photography. Its primary mission was the compilation and distribution of a photohistorians' directory, giving names and areas of interest. The directory, now called the International Directory of Photography Historians, is being retuned as an electronic resource. The easiest way to retrieve a copy and/or register in the directory is to use an internet browser to go to: http://www.webcom.com/cityg/resource/hpg/PhotoHistorians.html. If you have trouble, write to William Allen, Art Department, Arkansas State University, State University, AR 72467; [log in to unmask] There is no charge to electronically retrieve the directory or to register.
