The Phoenix Art Museum needs our help. The future of the educational
programs the Museum provides to the Phoenix metro area and to Arizona is
being threatened by the controversy that was initially focused on their
current exhibition, "Old Glory: The American Flag in Contemporary Art."
This one exhibition ,out of the average 20 per year the Museum presents, is
being used by some as reason to deny future City funding. City officials
must be reminded that Phoenix and Arizona have benefitted significantly
from the programs and services the Museum has provided during its 37-year
history. Curtailment of futrue programs and services would result from
decreased City funding, which is unacceptable.

Whether or not you live in the City of Phoenix, here's how you can help....

Call and / or write all members of the Phoenix City Council, the
Mayor of Phoenix, and the Phoenix Art Commissioners.

The bottom line is this is an issue of censorship and first amendment
rights. The controversy is over one exhibit made up of 80 pieces, two of
which seem to be at the heart of the controversy. According to Museum
statistics, only 2% of the visitors that have actually viewed the exhibit
have voiced concern or complaints.

I am sure the Museum will appreciate any support you are able to extend. I
have sent letters to all the above on behalf of ARLIS/AZ. Thank you.
