Among the many losses of the past four years of war in Bosnia is a unique
architectural heritage, targeted for destruction by nationalist extremists
(see Nicholas Adams, "Architecture as the target," JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY
OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS, Dec. 1993). The Mosque of Ferhad Pasha in the
city of Banja Luka, built in 1583 and included on UNESCO's World Heritage
list, was dynamited on the night of May 6-7, 1993; after the blast, Serb
nationalist authorities had the site leveled with heavy equipment -- all
rubble and stone fragments were removed under guard and disposed of at a
secret dump site out of town.

Aleksandar Ravlic, a scholar from Banja Luka now living in exile in
Croatia, has assembled photographs, drawings and texts documenting this
destroyed masterpiece of European Muslim architecture in a new monograph:

Ravlic, Aleksandar Aco.
Banja Luka's Ferhadija Mosque : a murdered beauty / Aleksandar Ravlic.
Rijeka, Croatia : Poduzece AARiS, 1996.
175 p. : mostly ill. ; 28 cm.
