----------------------------Original message---------------------------- The Catalogers' Discussion Group of ARLIS/NY gathered for a meeting on March 25, 1996 at the Pierpont Morgan Library. Twenty-two catalogers discussed issues relating to analytics cataloging. The discussion was based on the practices at the Robert Goldwater Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Pierpont Morgan Library. Both libraries would welcome sample records and/or comments from other institutions. Sample records in RLIN: NGMA96b46; NGMA96b120; NGMA95b736; NGMA95b746; NGMA95b642 NYPR96b69; NYPR96b803; NYPR95b2033; NYPR95b5078; NYPR95b4923; NYPR95b6581 Issues discussed included cost and time; redundancy with published indexes; funding and recon; analytics vs. collection level descriptions; analytics vs. 505 contents notes; "in" analytics vs. offprints (physically separate, but intellectually a component part); authority work; subject access; use of the BLT codes (aa vs. am); use of the linking fields (773, 787); treatment of photocopies; etc. A suggestion was made that instead of the display constant "In:" in the 773 linking field, a i subfield could specify other relationships than that: e.g., iOffprint from: iExtract from: etc. This has worked well with the 246 (variant title) field. The next meeting of the discussion group is planned to be held at the end of May.
