Library Systems Administrator - National Gallery of Art

The primary purpose of the position is to support the research needs of the National Gallery and Center staff, visiting scholars, and the local, national, and international art community, and serves as the library’s chief technical representative to other National Gallery IT initiatives and consortia library projects. The incumbent serves on the staff of the Exhibitions, Programs, and Audience Engagement officer, under the supervision of the chief librarian.

Duties

As the Information Technology Specialist you will:


  *
Administer, evaluate, and maintain integrity and functionality of all modules (acquisition, cataloging, circulation, interlibrary loan, discovery, user management, and reporting analysis and visualization) of a cloud-based library service platform (such as Ex Libris Alma/PrimoVE).


  *
Maintain service operation, apply new releases, fixes, and enhancements, and provides information updates to library departments as appropriate.


  *
Serve as technical liaison to service and system vendors and the National Gallery’s Digital Services (TDS) department. Coordinate the library service platform integrations with National Gallery institutional IT infrastructure and external environment (the enterprise digital asset management system, or EDAMS), ADFS/SAML, staff directory, email, AWS cloud services, network, firewall, and security); perform in-depth configuration and troubleshooting and to ensure library service platform’s functionality, security, compatibility, upgrades, and enhancements.

Lead library’s technology projects and coordinate these with other internal projects and institution-wide IT projects. Conduct user needs research and develops criteria for expansion of existing services to meet new demands. Provide and develop configuration, workflows, improvements, and new features to meet library staff work requirements and to improve patron experience.


  *
Develop, configure, and maintain content for the library service platform’s discovery web portal to provide optimal user experience; work with the National Gallery’s Digital Experience team (TDE) to configure library pages on institutional internal and external sites for desired functionality.
  *
Serve as the library’s chief technical representative to inter-departmental committees formed to develop, implement, and evaluate National Gallery IT initiatives relating to new systems and services, including (but not limited to) the institutional website, data analysis and visualization, AI initiatives, and telework capability; in collaboration with the library’s digital projects librarian, participate in the National Gallery’s enterprise digital projects and initiatives.

Develop and prepare technological documentation and training materials for staff and library users as needed. Notify library staff of training opportunities offered by the library service platform provider.

Qualifications

A Specialized experience is at least one year of experience at the GS 12 in federal service or equivalent with experience maintaining access to an automated library service, including all functions of the integrated library system, subscription databases and other internal and external electronic resources, assessing user needs, and documenting system changes.

Mastery demonstrated knowledge of information system development and experience with the operation and maintenance of IT technology ecosystem in general and particularly of library service platform, familiarity and experience with Ex Libris’ Almo/Primo library services platform and its integrations with other systems; familiarity with scripting and working with APIs; experience with systems testing and evaluation principles, methods, and tools; experience with reporting and analytical methods and practices.
  2.
Demonstrated ability to conduct analyses, identify and define business or technical requirements, recommend resolution, and apply to formulating the design, development, implementation, management, and support of information systems and support the research needs of the National Gallery, library staff, and other library clientele.
  3.
Knowledge and skill to apply standard web interface display and application technologies, including user experiences, information architecture, web standards, and web analytics.
  4.
Excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to provide clarification and guidance on complex IT issues to audiences within and outside of the library division, the National Gallery, system vendors, and information technology specialists in peer institutions.
  5.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide variety of professional and technical staff in the library, museum, and information technology field, including ability to keep abreast with new and emerging information technologies and/or industry trends.
