The Awards Committee of the ARLIS/NA Mid-Atlantic Chapter is delighted to announce the 2024 recipients of the Caroline Backlund Award and the Washinton Art Library Resources Committee Awards to attend the 52nd Annual ARLIS/NA conference in Pittsburgh.

Caroline Backlund Award

Caroline Myers, a MLIS student at Valdosta State University who is also the Research and Collection Specialist in Special Collections and Archives at the James Branch Cabell Library in Richmond, Virginia is the 2024 Caroline Backlund Award recipient. Caroline will be participating in the poster sessions and is also a member of the Documentation Committee.

This award is named in honor of Caroline Backlund (1920-2016) who had a distinguished career as an art librarian, educator, and author. Mrs. Backlund, a long-time chapter member, received the ARLIS/NA Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to the Society in 1989.

Washington Art Library Resources Committee Awards

The Washington Art Library Resources Committee (WALRC) comprised research libraries in the Greater Washington, DC area. In 1981, WALRC published Art serials: union list of art periodicals and serials in research libraries in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area (edited by Carolyn S. Larson) which proved to be a very useful and popular publication. In 2018 WALRC, which had been inactive for many years, disbanded and the funds from the sale of the publication were transferred to the Chapter. There are three WALRC Awards for 2024.

Salima Appiah-Duffell is the Resource Sharing Librarian at the National Gallery of Art Library, She is also the newly elected chair of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter and will be attending the Leadership Institute.

Kathryn Kalunzy is the Photo Archivist at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Library. She will be a first-time attendee! She is presenting a paper “Archives for Art’s Sake” at the Archives and Special Collections panel

Amy Watson is a newly minted librarian and was, until recently at the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. She joined the National Gallery of Art Library in December as a cataloger. She too will be a first time attendee!
