After a lapse of several years, the Decorative Arts Society (DAS) is reestablishing the Charles F. Montgomery Award and Prize for excellence in decorative arts scholarship, honoring the pioneering work of connoisseur, collector, antiques dealer, author, and teacher Charles F. Montgomery (1910–1978).

Entries are now open; the deadline for submissions is June 3.

The DAS first presented awards in Montgomery’s name in 1979. Since that time, the authors of many seminal books in the field of American decorative arts have received these awards.

Chaired by Lea C. Lane, curator of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA), the new selection committee will consider publications published in 2023 and will announce the recipients of the award and prize in the fall of 2024. The recipients of each will receive a certificate and a monetary award.

The Charles F. Montgomery Award is presented to the scholar(s) whose first major publication in the field of North American decorative arts is judged the most outstanding such work published in 2023.

The Charles F. Montgomery Prize is presented to one or more scholar(s) for the most distinguished contribution to the study of American decorative arts published in the English language by a North American scholar in 2023.

Those wishing to be considered for these awards should submit one copy of their publication, along with a note indicating the category for which it is being submitted, to Lea C. Lane, curator of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, 924 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or as a digital file via [log in to unmask] Works may be submitted by either the author or the publisher. Books will be used by the selection committee in its deliberations and will not be returned. For additional information, www.decartssociety.org or 336-721-7393.
