I just watched this presentation and found it quite informative, thus am sharing it with our list. Not only is this an effort to ban the import of looted archaeological and cultural artifacts, but it is also meant to facilitate research and educational activities.

There is a letter writing campaign with a very short deadline (midnight Eastern standard time on Monday the 22nd), should any of you be inspired to write.

Best wishes,

Dear colleagues:
I received this on a different list serve. It will no doubt be of interest to many members of ACSAA.
     in peace -- John Cort

India has requested a U.S. import ban as it relates to implementation of the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export, and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. This is India's first request for such a ban, which would be in place for 5 years and can be renewed indefinitely. The U.S. Cultural Property Advisory Committee is accepting letters of support through Monday, January 22, if you would be willing to write one.

Here are links to two videos, one on the cultural heritage of India, the other on effective CPAC letter-writing, with letter templates and instructions on where to send a letter and the relevant docket number on the page where the video is located.

Thank you for considering this request, and please feel free to share this information with any colleagues who may also want to advocate for this import ban. As collectors of antiquities will likely be submitting many letters arguing against the request, all advocacy letters will be helpful.
