Dear Colleagues of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter,

I am pleased to announce the 2024 Chapter Conference Travel Awards

ARLIS/NA Mid-Atlantic Conference Travel Awards

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of ARLIS/NA encourages its members to participate in the 52nd Annual ARLIS/NA conference in Pittsburgh. The Chapter will offer one Backlund and two WALRC awards.

Caroline Backlund Award
Deadline: February 2, 2024

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of ARLIS/NA presents an annual travel award to promote professional development for a chapter member at the annual ARLIS/NA conference. This award is named in honor of Caroline Backlund (1920-2016) who had a distinguished career as an art librarian, educator, and author. Mrs. Backlund, a long time chapter member, received the ARLIS/NA Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to the Society in 1989.

The 2024 Backlund Award is $1000.00 and is intended to help student members of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter become more involved in ARLIS/NA at the national level. It is maintained through donations from chapter members (although this year, the award is being funded using WALRC monies). The chapter invites contributions in any amount, year-round.

Criteria

Award applicants must be a current student member of ARLIS/NA and must be a current, student member of the ARLIS/NA Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Applications are encouraged for first time attendees and those who do not have institutional funding. Additional consideration given to applications for students participating in the conference as speakers, presenters, or in leadership positions.

Following the conference, the winner must submit a brief written report to the Backlund Award Committee within 30 days and should make a brief presentation to the chapter membership at the next meeting and/or through a posting on the chapter web site.

Application

Applicants for the award should submit a current résumé or curriculum vitae and a letter describing the benefits anticipated from conference attendance, their specific role in the conference (if applicable),  and a travel budget including any expected funding from the applicant’s institution or other sources.

Please submit applications for the Caroline Backlund Award to [log in to unmask]  by close of business on Friday, February 2, 2024. All applications must be submitted electronically.

Washington Art Library Resources Committee Award

The Washington Art Library Resources Committee (WALRC) comprised research libraries in the Greater Washington, DC area. In 1981, WALRC published Art serials: union list of art periodicals and serials in research libraries in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area (edited by Carolyn S. Larson) which proved to be a very useful and popular publication. In 2018 WALRC, which had been inactive for many years, disbanded and the funds from the sale of the publication were transferred to the Chapter. The WALRC Award is intended for professional (i.e. non-student) members of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter to become more involved with ARLIS/NA at the national level. Funding for the award is provided by income from WALRC invested accounts. There will be two Washington Art Library Resources Committee Awards for 2023. The awards will be $1,000 each.

Criteria

Award applicants must be a current member of ARLIS/NA the ARLIS/NA Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Preference will be given to chapter members who are participating in the conference or are members of committees or other leadership groups where their participation is necessary.

Following the conference, the winner must submit a brief written report to the Backlund Award Committee within 30 days and should make a brief presentation to the chapter membership at the next meeting and/or through a posting on the chapter web site.

Application

Applicants for the awards should submit a current résumé or curriculum vitae and a letter describing the benefits anticipated from conference attendance, their specific role in the conference (if applicable), and a travel budget including any expected funding from the applicant’s institution or other sources.
